Although there is some consternation among pitching mechanics experts on the landing of the foot, most believe a pitcher should land about 5% closed (RH pitchers plant foot pointing towards RH batter). Waltrip appears to land significantly open, which could cause him to open up too early leading to to control issues and arm stress. Some believe pitchers can gain some velocity this way though with an ultimate price of arm woes. It will be interesting to see if this is something the Orioles work with him on and if this leads to a drop in velocity.
